I bought my daughter two Taylor Swift tickets, so why can’t she bring a friend?

I purchased two tickets to a Taylor Swift concert for my teenage daughter and her friend.

When I bought them online there were no warnings to say it was a lead booker event — which means the person who books the tickets has to attend. In fact, the Ticketmaster website stated there were currently no lead booker events.

Ticketmaster has now changed its website and notified everyone that this is a lead booker event and, if the lead booker is not present, entry to the concert will be denied. Surely they cannot enforce this policy as I wasn’t made aware of it at the point of purchase? Francis Gordon, London.

In the case of Ticketmaster, these terms are referred to as its ‘Purchase Policy’. Following purchase, the terms of the contract can only be changed if both parties agree or if the terms and conditions state that a change can be made after the event and you are made aware of this.

Ticketmaster has clearly changed the terms of your contract ‘after’ you purchased the tickets.

While it has the right to do this within its Purchase Policy, you will also have the right now to demand a refund if the need for the lead booker to be present inconveniences you.

Is it true you can only claim a refund for a faulty car within seven days of purchase?

Earlier this month I bought a used Ford Focus from a local car dealership. Last week I broke down on the M6 and was recovered by the AA.

The mechanic told me the car had several problems and advised me to take it back to the dealership.

I did this and asked for my money back but the dealership told me ‘you can only claim a refund for a faulty car… if you make the claim within seven days of purchase or delivery of the vehicle’. Is this true? William Green, Birmingham.

Dean Dunham replies: Absolutely not. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 provides consumers with the right to reject goods (including vehicles) if they are found to be faulty within the first 30 days following the date of purchase or delivery, whichever falls later. This is known as ‘the short-term right to reject’.

This means your dealership’s terms and conditions are simply not binding, as the 30-day period for rejecting faulty goods cannot be cut short.
Can Saga start charging me to keep receiving its magazine?

Several years ago I signed up to a ‘lifetime’ monthly subscription to receive Saga Magazine in the post. Now Saga wants to renege on this and either change my subscription to a digital one or make me pay an annual fee of £29.95 if I want to continue receiving the print issue. Can Saga do this? Keith Temple, Winchester.

Dean Dunham replies: I recommend that you contact Saga and request a copy of the terms and conditions. Unless the terms specifically give Saga the right to cease providing ‘print’ copies of the magazine without a further charge, this change will amount to a breach of contract.

If this is the case, you and other subscribers will be entitled to carry on receiving the print version without an extra charge or get your lifetime subscription fee back.
