The 25-year-old athlete, who has won a record 25 world championship medals and 7 Olympic medals, spoke candidly about the challenges she has faced throughout her career.
Biles revealed that she has been subjected to bullying and criticism from a young age, which has taken a significant toll on her mental health.
She admitted to having suicidal thoughts in the past, saying, “I was like, ‘I don’t want to be here anymore. I don’t want to be alive.’”
The gymnast also spoke about the pressure she has faced to perform, saying, “I was always told, ‘You’re not good enough, you’re not skinny enough, you’re not talented enough.’” She added that these comments made her feel like she was “never enough.”
Biles also addressed the controversy surrounding her withdrawal from certain events at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, saying, “I was struggling with my mental health, and I didn’t want to compromise my safety.” She added that she was “vilified” for her decision, which made her feel “like I was a disappointment to everyone.”
Despite the challenges she has faced, Biles emphasized the importance of prioritizing mental health, saying, “We need to talk about it. We need to normalize it.” She also expressed gratitude for her support system, including her family and friends, who have helped her through difficult times.
