Patrick Mahomes’ anticipation for Marquise Brown receives validation from Pat McAfee as the Chiefs prepare to fill the void left by the departure of Tyreek Hill in 2022.
The Kansas City Chiefs offense is in for a jolt of electricity this season. The excitement is palpable throughout the NFL world and superstar QB Patrick Mahomes is giddy about the arrival of wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown. In fact, outspoken analyst Pat McAfee is also backing the excitement.
As Mahomes put it at a press conference this week, “I think everybody’s seen his speed and the way he’s able to track the football down the field.” The three-time Super Bowl champ was pleasantly surprised by Brown’s route-running chops during their recent offseason workouts down in Texas, raving about how “he has a good feel for space” when running his routes.
McAfee echoed that sentiment today on his show, exclaiming “This is going to be a weapon that is Unstoppable for most defenses.” The experienced former Colts punter has firsthand knowledge of facing the Chiefs’ potent offensive. He firmly expressed that Brown’s addition significantly enhances the Chiefs’ capabilities.
“When you think about Hollywood Brown’s career, he was in Baltimore and he didn’t think that they were utilizing the wide receivers enough,” McAfee noted. But in Kansas City, alongside the league’s top quarterback, the seasoned pass-catcher will receive ample opportunities to showcase his skills. The Chiefs’ new WR has some big shoes to fill, given Tyreek “Cheetah” Hill”s departure in 2022 to the Miami Dolphins.
Hill revealed that contract negotiations with the team broke down, as he felt the guaranteed money being offered didn’t properly reflect his value. Ultimately, the speedster found a more lucrative landing spot with the Dolphins, inking a four-year, $120 million deal. While the Chiefs valued Hill’s contributions, their inability to meet his financial demands led to his high-profile exit from the organization.
Much like Hill, Brown brings electrifying speed and big-play ability to the table. Chiefs fans are hoping the former Raven can seamlessly slide into the role vacated by the franchise’s all-time leading receiver. As Mahomes pointed out, Brown’s route-running prowess could be the “x-factor” that elevates the Chiefs’ passing attack to new heights. “The way he’s able to get in and out of his cuts, he has a good feel for space,” the QB raved. “We can utilize that ability over the middle of the field.”
Mahomes and Brown are dedicating time to bolster their connection on the field, leveraging the offseason program. Reid acknowledged the Texas camp’s advantage this week, highlighting how it enables players to engage in extensive training sessions with the MVP quarterback. This early preparation not only facilitates substantial progress but also fosters camaraderie among teammates before the demanding season commences.
