Patrick Mahomes Gives His Seal of Approval on Chiefs’ 2nd-Round Choice
After landing their first-choice wide receiver on Day 1 by drafting Xavier Worthy, the Kansas City Chiefs further bolstered their offensive unit by selecting offensive tackle Kingsley Suamataia out of BYU.
The 21-year-old offensive lineman will likely not get the starting job immediately over Jawaan Taylor and Wanya Morris but the Chiefs desperately needed more depth there and general manager Brett Veach addressed it immediately.
Considering that Suamataia was projected in the late first round in plenty of mock drafts, it is rather impressive that the Chiefs were able to land him with the 63rd overall pick.
So much so that Patrick Mahomes couldn’t contain his excitement after the pick. Taking to social media, Mahomes posted about his feelings towards Brett Veach.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise from Mahomes. Any quarterback would be thrilled to play behind one of the most athletic offensive tackles in the draft class, especially since Suamataia is widely considered to be particularly effective in pass-first systems due to his pass protection.
Over the past two seasons, Suamataia has only allowed two sacks in 23 games, receiving 75.8 and 67.5 grades on PFF. In 2022, he played all of his snaps at right tackle before switching to left tackle last season, making him an option for both positions.
Since the Chiefs moved up one spot to select the BYU standout, it’s clear that Veach & Co. had targeted Suamataia specifically. Only 21 years of age and with an excellent physical frame of 6’5 and 325 lbs, it makes sense why that would be the case. We can’t wait to watch him in Chiefs uniform.
